Bore Depth and Why a Ferrule Sits High

Read the pieceThe small black collar where shaft meets hosel gets treated as decoration by almost everybody. It is doing three jobs, and how well it is fitted is the fastest way to read the quality of the work underneath it.
Pick up any iron and look at the joint between the shaft and the head. There is a tapered plastic collar sitting on top of the hosel. Ask most golfers what it does and the answer is that it looks nice. That is one of its jobs, and the least important one.
The gap between shaft wall and hosel bore is where water gets in. In a climate like ours — a hundred per cent humidity most summer mornings, sprinklers running at dawn, bags left in vehicles — that matters more than it does in a dry state. Moisture sitting in a hosel corrodes steel shafts from the outside in and degrades the epoxy bond from the edge.
A ferrule seated flush and bonded properly closes that path. A ferrule with a visible gap under it is an open door.
The point where a shaft exits a rigid hosel is a stress concentration. The shaft wants to flex; the hosel will not let it. A properly fitted ferrule extends the effective support a small distance up the shaft and softens that transition.
This is a genuine engineering function, not a rationalisation. Shaft failures at the hosel line are less common on well-built clubs partly for this reason.
This is the one we care about most at the bench. A ferrule that does not sit right is a symptom. It means something below it is not right either, and the ferrule is the only part of that you can see from the outside.
A properly fitted ferrule has four characteristics, and you can check all of them with your fingers.
Ferrules are sold in nominal sizes, and hosels vary. A ferrule that measures 0.005 inches larger than the hosel it sits on will look like a small collar sticking out, and no amount of pushing changes that. The correct process is to install it slightly oversized and then turn it down on a lathe until it is genuinely flush.
This takes about ninety seconds per club with a bench lathe and a sanding block. Shops that do not have the equipment either accept the step or use a heat-and-smear technique that looks acceptable at a glance and is not.
We turn every one. It is not because we are fastidious about appearance — it is because turning forces you to look closely at the joint on every single club, and that is when you notice the ones that are not seated properly.
The most common ferrule complaint we see from clubs built elsewhere is a set where three or four of the ferrules have crept up the shaft, leaving a gap under them. Golfers usually assume the ferrules are shrinking or the glue holding them has failed.
What actually happened is that the shafts were not fully seated in the hosels at assembly. Epoxy filled the space, the ferrule sat on top of an incomplete insertion, and over a season of impact the shaft settled the last millimetre or two down into the bore — leaving the ferrule where it was.
That is a bond problem wearing a ferrule costume. The fix is a pull and rebuild, not a new ferrule, and the club was structurally compromised the day it was built.
The ferrule is the only visible evidence of assembly quality on a finished club. Learn what a good one feels like under a fingernail and you have a five-second inspection you can run on any club anybody hands you.
