Seventy-five minutes, face tape on every shot, and one variable moving at a time. The driver is the club where small changes show up fastest, which is why it is also the club where guessing costs the most.
Clubhead speed is the number everybody wants to talk about and it is rarely the number holding anybody back. Strike location is. A shot struck three quarters of an inch toward the heel loses ball speed, adds spin and starts left of where the face was pointing, and none of that is fixable with a different shaft.
So the session opens with tape on the face and a dozen swings with your existing driver. The pattern that emerges decides everything after it. A tight pattern low on the face points toward loft and launch work. A pattern smeared across the heel points toward length and lie. A pattern scattered everywhere points toward a conversation about whether a fitting is the right purchase this month.
Once the pattern is understood, we work through head model, loft setting, shaft and length in whatever order the pattern suggests, keeping everything else fixed while we do.
Stock drivers ship at forty-five and a half inches or longer because it flatters distance numbers on a demo day. Most amateurs strike the centre more consistently a full inch shorter, and the ball speed gained from better contact usually outweighs the speed lost to the shorter lever.
Adjustable hosels change loft, face angle and lie together, not independently. We move through the settings deliberately and note what each one does to your start line, because the face angle change is often the part that matters more than the loft.
The variable with the largest effect on tempo and sequencing. We hold model and flex constant and walk the weight range, which reliably produces a clear preference within fifteen swings.
Once weight is settled, profile fine-tunes launch and spin. A tip-firm shaft to bring a balloon down, a softer tip to get a low flight airborne — but only after weight is locked.
Movable weights shift the centre of gravity and with it the shot shape bias. Where a head allows it, we test the settings rather than leaving the club in whatever position it shipped in.
The last two per cent, and the one people forget. Grip weight and size affect how the finished head feels, and a build that measures perfectly can still feel wrong if the swing weight landed two points off.
It will usually tighten your dispersion more than it adds distance, and dispersion is what actually moves scores. Finding nine yards is pleasant; hitting three more fairways a round is worth more strokes than the nine yards will ever be.
It will not straighten a slice caused by an open face and an out-to-in path. Equipment can nudge a ball flight a few yards. It cannot rewrite the geometry of your delivery, and a fitter who tells you otherwise is selling something.
It also will not help much if you have not warmed up, if you are testing on a day when your swing is unfamiliar to you, or if you arrive determined to buy a specific model regardless of what the numbers show. We will say all of this during the session rather than after it.

Bermuda fairways in the dry season run hard. Carry matters less and total distance rewards a flatter flight, which changes the loft conversation compared with somewhere the ball plugs.
A lot of local layouts are lined with water and homes. A driver that finds twelve fairways is worth more here than one that finds nine and goes fifteen yards further.
