Ninety minutes and the longest session we run, because an iron set is not eight independent purchases. It is one instrument with eight notes that have to be in tune with each other.
Lie Angle Decides Where the Ball Starts
Of everything measured in an iron fitting, lie angle has the most direct effect on direction. If the toe sits high at impact the face points left of your aim; if the heel digs the face points right. On a 7-iron a couple of degrees of error moves the ball several yards offline before anything else in your swing has a say.
The awkward part is that static lie — measured with the club sitting on a gauge — is not the lie that matters. What matters is the angle at impact, with the shaft loaded and your body in motion. That is why we use a lie board and impact tape on the sole rather than fitting you standing still to a chart.
It is also why lie is the most common correction we make on clubs golfers already own. A set bought four years ago, played hard on firm Florida turf, will often gauge a degree or more from where it started, and nobody has looked at it since the day it was purchased.
How the Ninety Minutes Gets Spent
Gauge the Set You Own (15 min)
Every iron, loft and lie and length and swing weight, written down. This regularly finds variation nobody knew about, and occasionally it finds that the set is fine and the problem is elsewhere.
Dynamic Lie on the Board (15 min)
Sole tape, lie board, real swings. We read where the club is actually contacting the ground rather than where a static measurement says it should.
Length and Posture Check (10 min)
Wrist-to-floor is a starting reference, not an answer. What decides length is where you are comfortable and where the strike pattern tightens, which sometimes contradicts the chart.
Head and Shaft Testing (30 min)
Usually a 7-iron for testing, since it represents the middle of the set. Weight first, then profile, then head design, always with everything else held constant.
Gapping and Set Composition (20 min)
How far apart the clubs actually fly, where the set should start and stop, and whether the long end is better served by irons, hybrids or nothing at all.
The Top of the Set Is Where Bags Break Down
Almost every bag we review has one of two problems at the long end: two clubs that fly the same distance, or a thirty-yard hole between the longest iron and the shortest wood. Both come from buying clubs one at a time over years without ever laying the distances out side by side.

The 4-iron in that bag was doing nothing the 5-iron was not already doing. Removing it and replacing it with a properly sized hybrid turned a two-yard gap into an eleven-yard one and gave the player a club they could actually hold a green with.
Blades, Cavities and the Category in Between
The forgiveness conversation has become less useful than it used to be, because modern players irons are considerably more forgiving than the blades of twenty years ago while still looking compact at address. The honest question is not how much help you need but how much you notice.
Some golfers genuinely read feedback from a mis-hit and use it. Others are only discouraged by it. If you are in the second group, the wider sole and deeper cavity are not a compromise, they are the correct answer, and there is nothing to feel sheepish about.
What we will not do is put a low-handicap player into a game-improvement head because the numbers look marginally better in a bay, if they are going to look down at it on the first tee and hate it.
Bring the Whole Set
Including the long iron you never hit. That club usually explains a gap you have been quietly playing around for years.
