When Counting Points Runs Out of Road
Swing weight matching has a blind spot once club lengths vary widely. Moment of inertia matching addresses it.

Start with the easy one. Static weight is what a club weighs, full stop. Put it on a kitchen scale, read the number in grams, done. A finished 7-iron typically lands somewhere between 405 and 435 grams depending on shaft material and head design.
Swing weight is a different animal entirely. It describes how that mass is arranged along the length of the club, expressed as a letter and a number on a scale that runs from about C0 to about E0. It is not a weight at all in the physical sense, which is why the units are letters rather than grams.
The measurement comes from a specific piece of equipment: a balance beam with a pivot set fourteen inches from the butt end of the grip. The club is laid on the beam and a sliding counterweight is moved until the club balances. Where that counterweight ends up gives you the reading.
Fourteen inches is arbitrary. It was chosen decades ago and standardised because a common reference was more useful than a perfect one. What it approximates is roughly where your hands sit on the club, which is why the resulting number correlates reasonably well with what golfers describe as heft.
Because the pivot is fixed, mass added near the head has a much larger effect on the reading than mass added near the grip. That is the whole mechanism, and everything else follows from it.
These are the working numbers we use at the bench. They are approximations that hold well enough for practical building.
Look at the second and third items together and a common frustration explains itself. A golfer asks for their irons to be shortened half an inch. That drops swing weight by three points, from a comfortable D2 to a lifeless C9, and now the clubs feel like they have nothing in the head. The length change was correct; the failure was not compensating for it.
Consider two 7-irons that both weigh 418 grams on a scale.
The first has a 260 gram head, a 108 gram shaft and a 50 gram grip. The second has a 252 gram head, a 116 gram shaft and the same 50 gram grip. Identical static weight. The first will measure roughly four points higher on the swing weight scale because eight more grams are sitting at the far end of the lever.
Hand both to a golfer without telling them the specs and the difference is obvious immediately. One feels like it has something out at the head to swing; the other feels hollow. Neither is wrong — but only one of them is right for a given player.
Three situations account for most of the swing weight problems that walk through our door.
All three are correctable at the bench for modest money. Tip weights, head tape, grip weight changes and butt-end weighting all give us ways to move a club onto the number it should be on.
There is no universal answer and anyone who gives you one is guessing. Broadly, D0 to D3 covers most men's iron sets and C6 to C9 covers most women's, but plenty of good golfers sit well outside those ranges deliberately.
What matters more than the absolute number is consistency across the set and a deliberate choice rather than an accident. A set that is uniformly D4 because someone decided it should be is fine. A set that is D4 at the 5-iron and D1 at the 9-iron because nobody checked is not.
Static weight is how heavy the club is. Swing weight is where that weight lives. When a build feels wrong despite every other number matching the sheet, this is usually the number nobody looked at.
