The Studio

A Repair Bench That Grew Into a Fitting Room

We did not start out as a fitting studio. We started as the place people brought clubs when something had gone wrong, and the pattern in those repairs is what eventually turned into everything we do now.

How It Started

Nineteen Broken Sets in One Winter

The shop opened in 2009 in a smaller unit two buildings down, doing re-grips, shaft replacements and loft-and-lie work for a handful of clubs around north Naples. Nothing about it was ambitious. Somebody snapped a shaft, we replaced it, they went back out.

What changed the direction of the business was a stretch of that first winter when nineteen sets came through the door that had been custom-ordered elsewhere within the previous twelve months. Every one of them was gauged on arrival because that is standard practice before touching anything. Eleven had at least one club more than a degree off the spec on the order form. Four had length variation inside the set that no one had caught. Two had grips installed so far off square that the logo pointed at the golfer's belt buckle.

Those golfers had all paid for a fitting. Some had paid quite a lot. None of them had ever been given a single number confirming what they actually received.

The fittings were not the problem. The gap between the fitting and the finished club was the problem, and nobody was standing in it.

So we started standing in it. The fitting side of the business grew out of the repair side rather than the other way around, which is why the bench and the gauges came first and the launch monitor came fourth.

House Rules

Five Things We Decided Early and Never Revisited

These are not marketing lines. They are the operating decisions that make the rest of the business work the way it does, and each one costs us something.

RULE 01

No Brand Agreements

We hold no volume commitments with any manufacturer. That means we pay slightly more per component and get demo stock later than shops that sign up. It also means nothing on our wall is there because a quota needs filling this quarter.

RULE 02

Old Clubs Get Measured First

Every appointment opens with your current equipment on the gauges, before a single new head comes off the rack. It regularly costs us a sale, because roughly one visit in six ends with a bend and a re-grip instead of an order.

RULE 03

One Variable at a Time

Changing shaft, head and length together produces a better number and no understanding. We move one thing, watch what it does, and keep it or discard it. It is slower and it is the only way the session teaches you anything.

RULE 04

Assembly Stays In-House

We do not forward orders to a factory build department. Components arrive raw and are cut, prepped, bonded and gauged at our bench. If a club is wrong, there is exactly one person to ask about it.

RULE 05

Numbers Go Home With You

Target specs and finished specs, side by side, printed. Take that sheet to another shop in another state and they can reproduce or verify the work without calling us.

AND

The Part We Will Not Claim

Fitting will not fix a swing that changes shape every third shot. We say so during the session rather than after the invoice, and we will happily suggest you spend the money on lessons first.

The Room Itself

What Is Actually in Bay 6

The studio occupies two units joined into one long space. The front half is the hitting bay with a turf strip, a net, and enough ceiling height to swing a driver without ducking. The back half is the build shop, and it is deliberately visible from the bay because clients ask questions while a club is on the vise.

Equipment matters less than how often it is checked. Our loft and lie gauge is verified against a reference head at the start of every month and after anything gets knocked. A gauge that has drifted is worse than no gauge at all, because it produces confident numbers that happen to be wrong.

  • Launch monitor with indoor and outdoor calibration profiles
  • Loft and lie gauge with a monthly reference check
  • Fourteen-inch fulcrum swing weight scale
  • Shaft frequency analyser with butt clamp
  • Bench lathe for ferrule turning and tip prep
  • Pull rig, air compressor and solvent station for grip work
  • Putting strip with roll and start-line capture
Who Comes In

The Naples Mix

Our client list splits roughly in half. One half lives here year-round and plays two or three times a week on paspalum and Bermuda. The other half arrives in November, plays more golf in fourteen weeks than most people play in a year, and flies out in April.

Those two groups need different advice about the same equipment. A resident who plays through August heat needs grip compounds that survive humidity and sweat. A seasonal player needs everything checked during arrival week, because a bag that sat in a garage in Ohio all summer comes back with dry grips, loose ferrules and at least one club that got stepped on.

We schedule around both patterns. December through April runs at capacity and books out roughly two weeks ahead. Summer is quieter, which is when full set rebuilds and longer bench projects get done without anyone waiting.

Meet the Crew

Come Look at the Bench

Appointments are the easiest way in, but you are welcome to stop by during open hours and look at the shop before committing to anything.
